There is always a sense of mystery when it comes to therapy. This sense of the unknown can cause anxiety and distress. When we demystify the process, we can ease the anxiety, especially for younger family members. A typical first therapy session looks like the following.
Setting Ground Rules:
The therapist creates a safe space where all voices are heard and validated. Each family member gets equal amounts of time to speak and share. Interrupting is minimized and not tolerated.
Gathering History:
You will discuss yourself and your family, if applicable. You will only share information you feel comfortable sharing.
Goal Setting:
Together with your therapist, you will define what success looks like in terms of what you want to accomplish through counselling.
You will get to know your therapist. They will also have a chance to get to know you.
Obtaining therapy can be a challenging step. It is a step, though, that you can seek support and shared guidance.
